How to calculate cutting length of rectangular stirrups

Construction Software

In this construction video tutorial, you will learn how to measure cutting length of stirrups in beam.

Here, breadth of the beam is taken as 300 mm and depth is taken as 450 mm. Clear cover is taken as 20 mm. Diameter of stirrup is 8 mm.

Based on the above dimensions, the cutting length is calculated as follow :-

Cutting length = 2 (a+b) + hook lengths – bends

a = breadth of beam – (2 x clear cover) – (2 x diameter of stirrup)

b = depth of beam – (2 x clear cover) – (2 x diameter of stirrup)

After putting all the related values, we get the following outcome

a = 300 – (2 x 200) – (2 x 8) = 244 mm

b = 450 – (2 x 20) – (2 x 8) = 394 mm

For 135 degree bend, hook length = (10 x d)

For 90 degree bend, bend length = (2 x d)

Here, d denotes diameter of stirrup bar

As we know, Cutting length = 2 (a+b) + hook lengths – bends

By putting all values in the above formula, we get the following :-

Cutting length = 2 x (244 + 394) + (2 x 10 x 8) – (5 x 2 x 8) = 1356 mm or 1.356 m
