Basic thumb rule for overhead water tank design

Construction Software

In this civil engineering article, you will be familiar with some elementary thumb rules which are required for making the design of overhead water tank of any building.

The deepness or depth of foundation for water tank should not be lower than 150 mm.

Before foundation work, PCC should be done and the depth of PCC should not be lower than 15 cm or 150 mm.

It is recommended to only utilize circular column for water head tank.

The diameter of main steel bar for circular column should not be lower than 16 mm.

The diameter of tie bar known as ring for circular column should not be lower than 8 mm.

The numbers of main bars for circular column should not be lower than 6 numbers.

The size of cover block for circular column should be minimum 40 mm.

M25 grade of concrete with ratio 1:1:2 should be used for the construction work of column & water head tank where water will be stored.

The thickness of main tank should not be lower than 115 mm.

A stair is constructed to water head tank for maintenance purpose. The diameter of steel bars used in stair should not be under 10 mm.

The concrete used in staircase should be M20 grade with ratio 1:1.5:3.

The height of tank from ground level to top, should not be lower than 10m.
