Lean concrete means the concrete containing low cement content (cement content is under 10% of the total content). Here, total content signifies Aggregate + sand + any fillers + cement.
The primary objective of the lean concrete is to arrange the homogeneous surface to the foundation concrete and to get rid of the direct contact of foundation concrete from the soil. Lean Concrete is mostly utilized for filling or the foundations.
As the Aggregate/cement ratio is increased, the concrete will become leaner. In lean concrete, less quantity of paste is found for providing lubrication, per unit surface of aggregate and for this reason the mobility of aggregate is controlled.

In PCC (1:4:8) cement content is almost 7% whereas it is 5% in P.C.C.(1:6:12)
In order to make a strong and more consistent foundation, then both types of concrete (rich concrete & lean concrete) should be utilized in the production.
Major benefits of lean concrete:-
1. Prime objective of the lean concrete is to produce the consistent surface to the foundation concrete and to get rid of the direct contact of foundation concrete from the soil.

3. It is ideal for arranging a flat bottom in rough or dirt terrain.
4. Lean concrete contains a lower level of cement in it, that is why it’s mainly used for fillings or under the foundations, to keep it safe from the soil.
5. Lean concrete is applied to arrange a level surface , where main foundation (raft, isolated or any other type) can be set.
6. Another objective is to safeguard main foundation from soil underneath, because moisture or other chemicals in soil like sulphates may affect concrete and weaken it.
