Download the Excel based calculation Sheets for creating the perfect design of any retaining walls as well as verifying the suitability of this retaining wall against overturning and sliding forces.
A retaining wall refers to a structure that is designed and built up to defend the lateral pressure of soil, when any alteration occurs in ground elevation that surpasses the angle of repose of the soil. Retaining walls are useful for developing basement under ground level, wing walls of bridge and to sustain slopes in hilly terrain roads.
Retaining wall is formed with masonry and reinforced concrete. For masonry retaining wall, the depth of wall is raised along with height as masonry withstands the lateral pressure by its weight.
So, it is also known as gravity retaining wall. Whereas the reinforced concrete retaining wall withstands the lateral pressure by structural action like bending and leads to thinner section.
The main objective of a retaining wall is to hold or preserve soil behind it. Different types of materials are utilized to produce retaining walls like concrete blocks, poured concrete, treated timbers, rocks or boulders. Some can applied easily, others contain a shorter life span, but all can maintain soil.
In order to design and install the retaining walls, the emphasis should be given on identifying and neutralizing the trend of the retained material to drive downslope because of gravity. This produces lateral earth pressure behind the wall that is subject to the angle of internal friction (phi) and the cohesive strength (c) of the retained material, along with the direction and magnitude of movement the retaining structure undergoes.
