Bent up bars (Cranked bars) in slabs are required to withstand the negative moment (Hogging BM) developed at supports (beams). Besides, bent up bars can also look out of the diagonal shear stress near the supports.

Bent up bars are used in flat slab to enhance the deformation capability of the slab as well as decrease the possibility of a brittle failure of the slab-column connection.
