How to calculate the height of a rectangular water tank in excel

Construction Software

This civil engineering video tutorial will teach you how to determine the height of a rectangular water tank with capacity 15,000 litres. The calculation is done in a excel sheet.

The dimension of the water tank is given below :-

Length = 8 feet
Width = 5 feet
Height is unknown

The volume of rectangular shaped water tank will be calculated with the following formula :-
L x B x H

The capacity of water tank in litres = 15000

We know that in one m3, there will be 1000 litre of water and it is called as density of water.

So, density of water in one m3 = 15000/1000 = 15

Therefore, the volume of water tank = 15

We know, the length is = 8 feet = 2.439 meter (as 1 meter = 3.2808 feet)

Width = 5 feet = 1.524 meter

To find out the height of the water tank, you to determine the area of water tank first.

Area of water tank = Length x Width = 3.717 meter

So, the height of water tank = Volume of water tank / area of water tank
= 15 / 3.717 = 4.0355 meter

To covert the value to feet 4.0355 x 3.28 = (as 1 meter = 3.2808 feet) = 13.24 feet

So, the height of a rectangular water tank = 13.24 feet
