How to work out the volume of a hollow concrete column

Construction Software

In this civil engineering video tutorial, you will learn how to work out the quantity or volume of a hollow column.

The video is presented by renowned engineer Muhammad Ghani.

Hollow columns are extensively applied in bridge construction. Hollow columns are filled with sand so that the compressive strength of the column is raised. Hollow column offers more area of contact to transmit the loads to and from the columns.

The calculation is done based on the following information :-

The radius from outside portion to center of the column is denoted as R and from inside portion to center of the column is denoted as r.

The height of the column is provided as (H) = 4.5m

Outside radius of column is provided as (R) = 0.9m

Inside radius of column is provided as (r) = 0.45m

The following formula is used for making calculation :-

Volume of column = (πR2h - πr2h)
= πh (R2 – r2)

= 3.142 x 4.5 (0.92 – 0.452)
= 14.13 (0.81 – 0.2025)
= 14.13 x 0.6075
= 8.5839 cum or cubic meter
