How to design a water tank (by finding out the volume of water)

Construction Software

This is another useful presentation from renowned engineer Sami Ullah. In this construction video tutorial, you will learn how to design a water tank for different sectors.

Initially, you have to determine the volume of water necessary for one person each day. It is generally found that 135 litres of water is essential for one person on daily basis. Given below, the detailed breakup.

1) Drinking = 5 litres
2) Cooking = 5 litres
3) Bathing & Toilet = 85 litres
4) House Cleaning = 10 litres
5) Cloth Washing = 30 litres

You have to find out volume of water for the family having 12 members :-
Total necessity of water = 135 x 12 = 1620 litres each day.

It is known that :
Density of water = 1m3 = 1000 litres
So, 1 litre = 1/1000 m3 = 0.001 m3
So, volume of water = 1620 x 0.001 m3 = 1.62 m3
Suppose, height of water tank = 1.5 m
So, area of tank = 1.62/1.5 = 1.08 m2

The length and breadth of the water tank can be determined with the following formula :-
√1.08 = 1.03923 m

So, height of the tank = 1.5 m
Length = 1.03923 m
Breadth = 1.03923 m

Based on the above dimension, the design of water tank can be prepared easily.
