Construction Cost of One Column : Necessary Steps

Construction Software

In this exclusive civil engineering video tutorial, vital information is provided to determine the cost of one column. The cost of column is dependent on the size and height of the column.

The process explained in the video can be used for different types of columns with various sizes.

In column concrete and steel reinforcement are used. The concrete includes the quantities of cement, sand and aggregates and reinforcement comprises of steel. The cost of these materials should be calculated individually to find out the cost of column.

Suppose, the size of the column is 9” x 9” = 0.225 m x 0.225 m

The height of the column = 3.1 meter

The volume of concrete = Length x Breadth x Height = 0.225 x 0.225 x 3.1 = 0.157 m3

When M20 concrete grade is used, its ratio is 1:1.5:3

For 1m3 concrete, the quantity of cement = 8 bags, sand = 15 cft, aggregates = 30 cft (the calculation is done after converting weight volume to dry volume).

The required quantities of all the materials in column will be as follow :-

Cement = 0.157 x 8 = 1.256 bags
Sand = 0.157 x 15 = 2.355 cft
Aggregates = 0.157 x 30 = 4.71 cft
The price of one cement bag = Rupees 300
The cost of cement = 1.256 x 300 = 376.80

The cost of sand per cft = Rupees 40
The total cost of sand = 2.355 x 40 = 94.20
The cost of aggregate per cft = Rupees 60
The total cost of aggregate = 4.71 x 60 = 282.6

Now, the calculation of steel will be as follow :-

Main bar = 4 pieces T12
Total steel quantities = 3.1 x 4 = 12.4 meter (as height is 3.1 meter)
Ring will be provide as T8@150 c/c
So, total numbers of rings required = 3.1/0.150 m = 20 pieces
So, total quantities of steel required = 0.600 x 20 = 12 meter

The weight of steel with 12 mm dia (T12) = 0.89 kg/meter (calculation is done with D2 /162 formula)
So, total weight of steel = 0.89 x 12.4 = 11.036 kg
The weight of steel with 8 mm dia (T8) = 0.40 kg /meter
So, total weight of steel = 0.40 x 12 = 4.8 kg approx.
Therefore, total weight for 12 mm & 8 mm dia bars = 11.036 + 4.8 kg = 15.836 kg
Total cost of steel x 15.836 x 50 = Rupees 791.80
